G_CS_13 Countywide Continence Service: SOP for Provision of Containment Products
The Trust has a contract with a third party organisation called Ontex Healthcare (UK) Ltd who are contracted to provide and distribute continence products according to Trusts contract specifications. Because this process involves both the Trust and commercial providers it is vital that all parties work to Standard Operating Plan or SOPs. Effective collaboration is required to assure that quality of service delivery is maintained.
Ontex Healthcare (UK) Ltd produces a range of disposable continence products called the Euron Range. Within the contract a range of washable adult and children's pants, manufactured by P& S Healthcare Ltd is also available on the contract as an alternative to disposable products.
It has been proven that 70% of patients presenting to the Integrated Continence Team with a bladder and/or a bowel dysfunction, will respond to treatments. However 30% of patients will have intractable incontinence and will require products or continence aids to ensure social continence. (Royal College of Physicians, 2001)
The Trust is working towards implementing a clinical decision making tool. The Continence Assessment Scoring Tool (CAST) has been devised to assist clinicians to identify which patients may be helped with successful treatments and those which require containment products. However, all patients require a continence assessment before containment products are considered.
