G_CS_20 Managing A&E, Minor Illness and Injury Unit, Urgent Care Centre, Out of Hours and Children's Ward Discharge Liaison Information

This guideline should be used in conjunction with the local Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Board and Lincolnshire Community Health Services policies on safeguarding children and young people where applicable.

  • To promote effective communication pathways and systems which co-ordinate children’s care between hospital and community services.
  • To identify children and families who may require increased support or services.
  • To facilitate information sharing in order to safeguard children and young people and promote their welfare.
  • To reduce preventable accidental injuries in children.

Following the Laming Inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie (DH 2003), recommendations were made that information relating to a child’s attendance at Accident and Emergency Department or discharge from hospital should be shared with primary care and community services to ensure an effective handover of care and provision of services.

There is also clear statutory guidance that sets out what NHS organisations are expected to do regarding safeguarding children, detailed in "Working Together to Safeguard Children" (DCSF 2010) and "Statutory Guidance on making arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children under Section 11 of the Children Act 2004" (HM Government 2007).

This service will also cover the Lincolnshire Community Health Services Out of Hours Service (OOH), Walk in Centre, Urgent Care Centres and minor injury/illness units (MIIU) where children/young people’s information is received.
