G_IPC_18 Prevention and Management of Inoculation Injuries

The purpose of this guidance is to inform staff in the prevention and management of inoculation exposure injuries in line with current Department of Health requirements.

Introduction

Accidents with blood and bodily fluids may occur in any health care setting. In certain circumstances, such accidents can be associated with a small, but significant risk of transmission of one of the blood borne viruses; Hepatitis B, C, and HIV.

Whilst inoculation exposure injuries are unusual, when they do happen, a heightened level of anxiety is experienced by those sustaining the injury and it is therefore important that all staff hold working knowledge of local policies within their clinical area.
