Band Sounds Out Big Thanks For Cardiac Rehabilitation Group

Posted on: 25th March 2014

Generous Big Band members have taken to the stage in Gainsborough to say thank you to a local Cardiac Rehabilitation Service for helping one of their own on to the road to recovery.

Room 21 helped to raise £1,293 at a special 1940s event at the Blues Club in aid of the volunteer-run Gainsborough Heart Support Group.

The volunteers have in turn pledged to use the donation to buy new equipment for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Service run by specialist nurses and physiotherapists from Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) at the Trentside Rehabilitation Unit at John Coupland Hospital.

The event was organised by former patient and baritone saxophone player Ernie Allport, who completed an eight-week rehabilitation programme after experiencing a heart attack.

Ernie (83) said: "I wanted to give something back for all they have done for me and to say thank you to everyone who treated me in Gainsborough and Lincoln. They have all been fantastic."

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Service offers patients advice on recovery after a cardiac event and includes a comprehensive programme of exercise and education on a range of topics to support patients back to everyday life as efficiently and successfully as possible after a heart attack, heart surgery or procedure.

The group is also supported by volunteers from the Gainsborough Heart Support Group.

Karen Duff, Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist for LCHS, said: "We would like to thank Ernie and all of Room 21 for this donation. The dance was a great success and it was wonderful to hear they had even penned a personal thank you for the team into one of their songs. We hope to use some of the donation towards buying a new training defibrillator to enhance our basic life support education session.

"We would also like to thank the Gainsborough Heart Support Group for their continued support. It is a valuable resource in the community for patients and their families who need support following a cardiac event."

Gainsborough Heart Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of every month at the Gainsborough Scout Hut, Love Lane, Gainsborough, from 7-9pm.
