Health leaders urge patients to take advantage of Peterborough Urgent Treatment Centre

Posted on: 22nd May 2020

This bank holiday weekend, and beyond, Peterborough Urgent Treatment Centre is still open to help people who are suffering from a wide range of minor injuries and illnesses.

Health leaders in Peterborough are urging people to attend Peterborough Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) for a wide range of minor injuries and other medical problems, to make sure patients get the right care at the right time.

The Peterborough UTC, located at the City Care Centre on Thorpe Road, is able to treat patients who need urgent treatment but do not require an ambulance or a visit to an emergency department. The UTC is open seven days a week between 8am-8pm, including on the upcoming Bank Holiday Monday (25 May).

Attending the UTC with an urgent issue that does not require treatment from an emergency department does not only help the NHS by relieving pressure on A&E departments and hospital resources; it also helps patients by allowing them to get the right help at the right time.

Some of the issues with which the UTC can help you include sprains and strains, suspected broken bones, minor head injuries and conditions affecting young children including those under the age of two. If people are unsure whether they need medical attention from the UTC or elsewhere, NHS 111 online is available 24/7 to signpost them to the right service. Visit 111.nhs.uk to access this tool.

Speaking on behalf of NHS organisations in Peterborough, Dr Gary Howsam, Clinical chair at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group, said:

“We encourage anyone who needs medical attention for minor injuries to use the Peterborough UTC, which continues to provide great service as normal to residents by seeing patients 7 days a week, 8am-8pm, for a range of injuries and conditions. Measures have been put in place to ensure that patients can be seen safely throughout the COVID-19 outbreak.

“By going to the UTC for issues that don’t require a visit to the Emergency Department, you can make sure you get seen by the right medical professionals at the right time. A trip to an A&E department can often feel stressful, so this is a very good alternative for those patients who have sustained minor injuries, such as strains, sprains, minor head injuries or cuts and grazes.

“If you are unsure if you need to attend the UTC or get medical attention elsewhere, NHS 111 online provides free advice 24/7. You can access the tool via 111.nhs.uk.”
