New memory tree to remember loved ones

Posted on: 16th April 2025

A special memory tree has been introduced on Scarbrough ward at Skegness Hospital as a small gesture to help bereaved families remember their loved ones.

The memory tree gives grieving families an opportunity to add a personalised plaque in memory of their loved one, who passed away on the ward.

Scarbrough ward is run by Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group (LCHG) and is a 15-bed unit that includes three palliative care beds, for palliative assessments, symptom management and end-of-life care.

Dawn Hough, a Trainee Nursing Associate, who works on the ward said: “I organised events to raise money to purchase the tree and it was heartwarming to receive support from staff, our patients and their families, and the local community.

Dawn continued: “The memory tree will be a wonderful addition to our ward and represent the beauty of each individual who we have had the pleasure of caring for at the end of their lives.”

The memory tree is a small part of a planned refresh of the ward environment. The refurbishment includes murals in the corridors featuring local photos provided by Skegness Camera Club.

Luke Parker is a member of the Skegness Camera Club and also works as a healthcare support worker on Scarbrough ward.

Luke said: “I’m so pleased Skegness Camera Club supported the ward by providing murals of Skegness. It’s a privilege to see them displayed in my work environment and it makes me feel very proud.”

The memory tree and ward refresh was funded by Lincolnshire NHS Charity which supports patients, families, and staff through the provision of additional resources and services.

Scott McGinn, Charity Manager, said: “This is such a thoughtful way to remember loved ones and we hope it helps families during such a difficult time. I would like to thank everyone who has supported the charity and made this possible.”
