Course Overview
This course is suitable for all those who may be asked to undertake the procedure of venepuncture whether they hold a professional registration or a part of the wider workforce.
Course Duration
One day programme from 9:30am to 4.00pm (registration 09:15)
Objectives
Attendees complete a theoretical study day with opportunities during the day for simulated practice using phlebotomy manikins.
Outcomes will enable attendees to understand:-
- The legal and professional implications of carrying out this expanded practice skill
- Anatomy and physiology in relation to this skill
- The importance of the tests being requested and the avoidance of pre-analytical errors
- The equipment required and safe usage, risk management and clinical waste disposal requirements
- Infection and prevention control precautions relevant to the skill of venepuncture.
To practice this skill with the manikins complete a skills assessment before commencing a competency based assessment package.
The course objectives are akin to National Organisational/Skills for Health competencies.
