Clinical Assessment Service
Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) is part of our urgent care offer. Patients are referred to Clinical Assessment Service by NHS 111 or by health professionals.
CAS is staffed by clinicians such as senior nurses, pharmacists and GPs. In most instances, after speaking over the phone directly with a clinician, patients are reassured about the best service to turn to for support. This can be an urgent care, their GP or other services. CAS staff can also issue prescriptions which can be sent and picked up from a community pharmacy. CAS clinicians can directly support and treat patients over the phone or directly book appointments in urgent care settings or with GPs. This gives greater confidence to patients that they have an appointment time rather than waiting in long queues in either an urgent treatment centre or A&E.
CAS support for health professionals
CAS also offers support to health professionals, for example paramedics who are on the scene, who need help to decide where to transfer a patient or if they need to seek advice and guidance on any treatment that could be provided straight away.
CAS for care homes
CAS for care homes is a local out-of-hours alternative to NHS111 which provides nursing and residential care homes with direct and priority access to a dedicated service for urgent but not life-threatening cases. Our team offers the knowledge and experience of advanced practitioners and doctors with knowledge of local health and social care services. This approach means that people are much more likely to stay at home rather than attend A&E or if they need to go to a hospital they can be directly admitted to a ward.
